Author: Franciszek Jurjewicz (1849–1924)

Franciszek Jurjewicz, a painter and public figure, was born in 1849 in Pskov. He studied law in Sorbonne, and in 1875–1876 he learned painting in Paris under L. E. Dardoize. In 1882 he moved to Vilnius and together with Alfred and Edward Mateusz Römers, he used the painting studio in the Römers’ house in Bokšto Street. He participated in the exhibitions of Vilnius artists and in those organised in Lvov and Cracow. In 1890 he joined the secret society Oświata and contributed to its press. During 1906–1914 he was editor-in-chief of the periodical Dziennik Wileński. In 1914–1917 he served in the Polish Army. He returned to Vilnius in 1920. He painted images of Vilnius and realistic Lithuanian rural landscapes. He died on 27 June 1924 in Vilnius.
