Author: Algirdas Petrulis (1915–2010)

Algirdas Petrulis, a painter and teacher, was born in 1915 in the village of Natiškiai, in the Biržai district. Between 1934 and 1939, he studied painting in Justinas Vienožinskis’ studio at Kaunas School of Art, and Germanic languages and literature in the Faculty of Humanities at Kaunas University. He served in the Lithuanian army from 1939 to 1940. He began to participate in exhibitions in 1939, and later worked as a drawing teacher. Between 1941 and 1942 he was Justinas Vienožinskis’ assistant in the Painting Department at Vilnius Academy of Art. Later, during the war, he was a curator at the Vilnius Art Museum. Between 1944 and 1951, he was an assistant professor in the Painting Department at Vilnius Art Institute. From 1962 to 1984, he was a lecturer and associate professor (from 1968) in the Pedagogical Department of the State Art Institute of Lithuania. He held his first solo exhibition in 1964. His works were shown in Russia, Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Georgia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Italy, Finland and the USA. He won several prizes and a diploma for his landscapes and watercolours, the Lithuanian State Award in 1983, and the National Prize for Culture and Art in 1995. He was granted the title of honorary professor at Vilnius Academy of Art in 2005. Petrulis was awarded the Cross of Commander of the Order of Grand Duke Gediminas of Lithuania. He died in Vilnius on 25 January 2010.
