Author: Ignas Šlapelis (1881–1955)

Ignas Šlapelis was a historian of art, teacher, painter and graphic artist. He was born on 31 January 1881 in Bugailiškiai, Kupiškis district. He attended a Gymnasium in Liepaja and once finished, in 1899, he entered the Kaunas Theological Seminary. In 1904 he left the Seminary and went to study at the Cracow Academy of Art. He took a deep interest in history of art and studied philosophy at Cracow University. He continued his art studies at the universities of Sorbonne, Florence and Rome. He participated in the VIII exhibition of Lithuanian Art in 1914. In 1922–1924 he was director of M. K. Čiurlionis Gallery and in 1922 began to lecture on ornamentation and history of art at the Kaunas School of Art. In 1929–1940 he was director of that school. He painted mostly landscapes, of which only a few remained. In 1944 he left Lithuania. He died on 3 June 1955 in Chicago.
