Author: Józef Horyd (1898–1939)

Józef Horyd was a painter, graphic artist and drawer. He was born on 15 July 1898 in Vilnius (according to other sources – in Odessa). During 1918–1920 he served in the Polish Army. In 1923 he began his studies at the Art faculty of Vilnius Stephen Bathory University under F. Ruszczyc and L. Slendzinski. After graduation he visited Italy and France several times. He was a member of the Vilnius Plastic Artists’ Society. He displayed his works in Vilnius, Paris and Poznan. In 1933–1934 he had his personal exhibition in Vilnius. He painted portraits, landscapes, produced some works of etching and wall painting (murals and stained glass for the casino hall of the Vilnius garrison, an allegoric composition for the hall of the Chamber of Commerce and Trade), and sculptures (a crucifix for the chapel of St. Jacob hospital in Vilnius). He was killed by the bombardment near Vilnius on 1 September 1939.
