A view of the old Kaunas Castle

Author: Józef Oziębłowski (1805–1878)

Józef Oziębłowski (1805–1878) studied mathematics at Vilnius University, and draughtsmanship and painting under Jan Rustem. In 1833 he bought a lithographic printing press from the university, and kept it until the 1863 uprising. It is believed that around 600 lithographs were printed on his press: it was the most productive press in the city. Drawings for printing were made by various artists, but Oziębłowski, as the owner, put his own signature on the lithographs. His prints depicted religious themes, architecture in Vilnius, city plans, landscapes, and portraits of historic personalities.
