Jerzy Hoppen was a painter, graphic artist, restorer, teacher and an amateur photographer. He was born in Kaunas and attended the Gymnasium there. In 1913 he studied at the Cracow Academy of Art under S Dębicki. In 1914–1921 he lived in St. Petersburg, Kazan and Krasnoyarsk, and perfected his artistic skills on his own. In 1921 he returned to Vilnius, studied art at Vilnius University and continued his artistic and pedagogical work. At the end of 1924 and the beginning of 1925 he was in Paris where he attended drawing and graphics classes at the Colarossi Academy (Académie Colarossi). He was a member of the Vilnius Plastic Artists’ Society and in 1927–1931 the director of its School of Handicraft. In 1931 he began to work in the studios of the Art faculty of Vilnius University and in 1937–1939 was the head of the studios. From 1946 he lived in Torun. During 1947–1961 he was the head of the Graphics department of Torun University. He produced images of Vilnius (three albums of etchings with the Old Vilnius cycle were of a particular success), portraits, some stage settings, posters, ex-libris, wall paintings and illustrated books. He died in 1969 in Torun.
