Author: Józef Czajkowski (1872–1947)

Józef Czajkowski, a painter, graphic artist, architect and teacher was born in 1872 in Warsaw. In 1891 he studied at the Munich Academy of Art under J. Herterich, L. Herterich and K. Marr, then at the Julian Academy in Paris under J. B. Constant, J. P. Laurens, in J. Whistler’s studio, and at the School of Art and Crafts (Kunstgewerbeschule) in Vienna. In 1894–1895 he studied at the Cracow Academy of Art and from 1898 he was a member of the Polish Artists’ Society Sztuka. From 1913 he lectured at the Cracow Academy of Art, from 1919 – at the Art faculty of Vilnius’ Stephen Bathory University, and in 1923–1938 – at the Warsaw Academy of Art. He painted landscapes, portraits and daily-life pictures. He designed secession-style furniture, carpets and stained-glass. He died in Warsaw in 1947.
