Boleslovas Buika (Bolesław Buyko, 1878–1939). Bolesław Buyko was a painter, watercolourist and illustrator. He was born in 1878 in Švenčionys County. He attended drawing school in Vilnius and in 1896–1902 studied at the Cracow Academy of Art under F. Cynk, J. Malczewski, A. Daun and L. Wyczółkowski. In 1902 or 1903 he settled in Paris. From there he visited Great Britain, Southern France and Italy. In 1904 he debuted in the Paris Autumn Salon. His works were oftenexhibited in the Paris exhibition halls until 1936. He had his personal exhibitions in Warsaw, Paris, Nice, and would sendhis works to exhibitions in Vilnius. B. Buyko painted landscapes, portraits, still-life paintings, interiors and thematic compositions. His works are characterised by free strokes, emotionality, and application of “plein–air” painting principles. B. Buyko died in 1939 in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrate (near Nice).

Bolesław Buyko was famous for his watercolours of cities. In 1904, when he was 26, he exhibited four pictures of Paris in the Autumn Salon (Salon d’Automne). Later, his works were appreciated in Warsaw and Lvov. In 1911, Buyko became a member of the International Watercolour Society. He liked to paint the architecture of old towns. In a personal exhibition in 1921, he showed 53 views of architecture in Rome, Sienna, Verona, Assisi, Florence, Venice and Brittany. The artist painted a number of Lithuanian cityscapes; he participated in art exhibitions in Vilnius several times (in 1904, 1911, 1912, 1922 and 1923).
